The Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass (BRSB) is a brass ensemble full of talented musicians from the Brevard, Hendersonville, Asheville and Greenville areas. The BRSB musicians are dedicated to performing works for brass choir and featuring the instruments found in a symphony orchestra brass section – trumpet, French horn, euphonium, trombone and tuba.
The Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass has been performing since 2014, presenting an impressive repertoire of brass ensemble music, including the “Overture to The Mikado”, “Excerpts from Prokofiev’s Lt. Kije”, “Grand Choeur Dialogue” for brass and organ, Strauss’ “Vienna Philharmonic Fanfare”, Marcel Dupre’s “Poeme Heroique” and Renaissance dances from “The Danserye”, as well as several magnificent renditions of favorites by Bach, and Gabrieli performed by three brass choirs playing in the balcony above the audience! Concerts are performed in a variety of locations, from churches to concert halls such as The Porter Center on the campus of Brevard College. Concerts have taken place in Hendersonville, Brevard, Asheville and Greenville, with plans for concerts in Polk County and Black Mountain, as well.
A symphonic brass ensemble is not your everyday chamber group. The number of musical styles and wonderful combinations of sounds a brass ensemble can produce is, indeed, surprising. When you think about an exciting symphony orchestra concert, the brass section often plays a large part in creating that excitement (think “1812 Overture,” or perhaps Also Sprach Zarathustra, usually associated with the film “2001 – A Space Odyssey”). However, a brass choir can also produce some of the most ‘velvet’ and luxurious sounds imaginable. When you pair twenty-plus outstanding brass musicians with one of our area’s talented organists, you can rest assured that it will be a performance not soon forgotten.
The members of the Blue Ridge Symphonic Brass are some of the finest musicians in Western North Carolina, and bring a wealth of musical experience to the stage. Members of the BRSB and Maestro Jamie Hafner have performed with many fine professional orchestras and bands, including the Atlanta, Syracuse and Jacksonville Symphony Orchestras, the U.S. Military Academy Band at West Point and others. Many are in demand for musical offerings throughout WNC and perform locally with orchestras, choirs, jazz ensembles, and bands. Please see the attached “Members” page for more information.
These talented musicians volunteer their time and talents to this unique organization. Their mission is twofold: to bring this spectacular music – not often heard on chamber music series – to those in our area who love and support music and the arts, and to share their knowledge and passion for music, brass and performance with aspiring student brass players. Plans are in the works for a one-day workshop that will be free and open to any high school student in the area. Talented players and teachers of the BRSB will work with students on aspects of brass playing and performing, as well as offering the students an opportunity to sit in with the BRSB, ending the day with a public performance.
